REVIEW: Advent calendar 10 December 2024

December is going quickly – already up to two-digit numbers. Christmas will be here before we know it. But between now and then we do have the advent calendar to keep us entertained. Will it bring us (another) surprise today? Read on to see what we got…

Yesterday, we got a Hufflepuff minifigure, Susan Bones, and with that the usual base of a Hufflepuff statue. So I did predict that today we would get the actual status – and for once I was right.

Made from 12 pieces (all generally smaller) and no spares, today has the lowest part count to date (disregarding the days with minifigures, as they are rather valuable by themselves).

The parts are not particularly interesting either, but all this doesn’t matter if the model is good.

And it is better than the Slytherin statue in my opinion, though that doesn’t say a lot. It is actually very, VERY similar in design to the Gryffindor statue we got 2 December. Only the head differs (and the base is in a different colour, using Hufflepuff yellow rather than Gryffindor dark red).

It is a fairly straightforward build…

As with the Gryffindor and Slytherin statues, they all have wings, probably to make them more gargoyle like, though gargoyles doesn’t actually have to have wings.

Does it look like a badger (with wings)? Not really to be honest. It doesn’t look as much koala/gummi bear like as the Gryffindor lion (which head did look lion like too), but not really badger like either. But it does have four legs and two ears, so I’d say it is better than the Slytherin snake statue that didn’t look like a snake at all.

Summary

Certainly not the best day, but not the worst either. I’m leaning towards 2.5 out of five house points due to lack of resemblance with the badger and low part count, but taking into account a badger would be hard to make at that scale, I’ll give it a score of 3 (nicely between the scores I gave the Gryffindor (3.5) and Slytherin (2.5) statues.

While an average score, I certainly hope for something better tomorrow. Probably too early for another minifigure, so maybe another house table? Or other things to decorate the Great Hall (like a fire place, house points counter, etc)? Check back tomorrow on the 2024 Advent Calendar page to see what we got.

Till then, Build the Magic!

  1. Far more generous score than I would have given it! I feel like they are running low on ideas or the folks in quality control were sleeping off a rough night when this slipped through!

  2. I just took off the two side wings of the snake and the triangular pieces at the back of the lion and badger. The figures are still quite stylized, but they look more like they’re supposed to look now. Unless those other pieces have a reason for being there, I’m leaving them off.

  3. I was wondering if the ‘wings’ on the back were supposed to represent the ‘shields’ from the House Crests, but they are too small and then there isn’t one for the Slytherin creature which looks like a bird and not like a serpent at all. Very disappointing this year, so far. I agree with Mary!

  4. I was upset when my husband bought me the ‘official’ hogwarts advent calendar this year–silly boy thought I’d like to switch things up a bit. But so far, I think it was a better choice than my usual HP Lego advent fare! So far I’ve gotten an iron-on patch for Gryffindor, a brush and ink, Hogwarts letter paper, and a magic wand/ink pen!

    1. Being the sixth LEGO HP calendar I’m reviewing, it’s a bit hard to be impressed, with many ideas reused. But it’s still okay. We had many very small models last year, so doing better now. But minifigures haven’t been as impressive this year so far.
