REVIEW: Advent calendar 12 December 2023

On the twelfth day of Christmas, my advent calendar gave to me… Today is the half-way mark (already) and hopefully the calendar has something good lined up. Yesterday, I was guessing for another outdoor based model, but I could be wrong. Read on to see what we got…

We are still outdoor with today’s model. And it is still cold out there – so cold that the little fountain that we got (at least that is what I think it is) is all frozen.

We got 11 parts in the bag today of which one is a spare. While the parts are not that small, there isn’t really any super-interesting ones in the mix. Nothing printed or (to my knowledge) rare. So from a parts perspective, this is below average.

Of course, it also matters how you put together those parts. A good model of simple parts can be great.

But to be honest I don’t really get many “great” vibes looking at the completed model. The use of the crystal piece as the frozen fountain water is probably the main attraction.

Update to 8 December model review

I love getting comments/responses/reflections back when posting. And following my review of the 8 December model, where I questioned the use of the white round brick in the middle of the sign post pole, a reader advised me that British road signs used to be alternating black/white in colour as per photo below. And Hogsmeade would of course use that old British style, so a perfect choice for the model.

So a score of 4.5 house points for the model that day would have been appropriate then!

Summary

But what about today? With the low part count, lack of interesting parts and not a super interesting composition either, I’ll give it 2.5 out of five house points. I was considering a two, but the use of the crystal piece for the frozen water lifted it slightly.

What will we get tomorrow? Being half way through the calendar, we’ve been getting minifigures every 4 days. With that logic, we should get another one tomorrow – but which? Or maybe they don’t follow the logic and we’ll get something else? Check back tomorrow on the 2023 Advent Calendar page to see what we got.

Till then, Build the Magic!
