Over the last couple of years, I've been working on a large LEGO model of Diagon Alley. It started with a custom model of the Leaky Cauldron and another of the Weasley's Wizard Wheezes shop. Realising I had two key components of Diagon Alley, I thought, why not build it all (or almost all at least)? So welcome to my Diagon Alley!
Of all the shops in Diagon Alley, Quality Quidditch Supplies was probably Harry Potter’s favourite. He visited it often when he stayed at the Leaky Cauldron for three weeks (in the Prisoner of Azkaban), since the new Firebolt racing broom had just been introduced that summer and one was on display in the shop window. Already the opening scenes of the movies introduces us to number 4 Privet Drive, with Harry being delivered on the doorstep of the house that would become his home after the tragic death of his parents. While Harry hated his time there, the home was an integral part of the story and some of the most memorable scenes happened there (poor aunt Marge). As result, 4 Privet drive has both been released as an official set and been built by many fans as well, as we shall look at here.
The weekend 18-19 January 2020 I visited Brickvention in Melbourne. It was an amazing experience with 300 exhibits and expectedly 22,000 visitors. This makes it Australia's premier LEGO Fan convention. This post covers the exhibits I saw that were Harry Potter related and really shows the skills of the builders exhibiting there.
Back in September 2019 I visited Skærbæk Fan Weekend in Denmark. It is the biggest LEGO Fan Convention in Europe with more than 1000 LEGO Fans attending the convention and bringing along some really awesome displays. The Dursley family contains some of the most iconic characters in the Harry Potter universe. Without Harry's horrible time with the Dursleys at 4 Privet Drive, it just wouldn't be the same. It is therefore a bit surprising that of those, only Vernon Dursley has been released as minifigure, and that was back in 2002 where they were still yellow faced. Everyone hates Dolores Umbridge, period. But there are other villains in Harry Potter, including Voldemort of course. Fairly high on my list of nasty personalities is Rita Skeeter, a journalist of the Daily Prophet wizarding newspaper. She invented fake news years before it was even discussed in the Muggle world. I made a minifigure of her for my display at Comic-con back in September, but have only now found the time to write a post about it.
What started as a project to build the Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes shop on Diagon Alley has become a major project. I'm now aiming at recreating a most of Diagon Alley along with Knockturn Alley and a bit of Charing Cross in London. It has progressed well in the last couple of months, so here's where it is up to.
